Hygge, a cosy place in Milan

Inge de Boer Pubblicato il 20 Giugno 2019

A few years ago the word hygge somehow suddenly became part of our dictionary. Officially hygge is an untranslatable word but it has to do with an intimacy, cosiness and feeling at home. It probably has been the intention of the owners of bar Hygge in Milan, that consist of different areas good for different types of visit or moments of the day.

A Hygge place in Milan

I’ve been to Hygge for a lunch on a weekday. It is not a place that one bumps-in to, you really need to know that it exists, even though it is not far from the buzzling Corso Genova. Thanks to the size of this place, enlightened by big windows, they have managed to create different areas each with their own characteristics. If you want to read a book, you sit down directly on the right side of the main entrance. Those who need to work or like to meet other people, find a seat in the long table placed in front of the bar, like I did. In case you need a more intimate space, go to the ‘podium’ that sits behind the bar, at the far most corner of the Hygge.

Even though there is lots of different corners in Hygge, the overall atmosphere is very welcoming, not too many colours but well-light and warm thanks to the many plants present in all the different areas of this ‘coffeehouse bistrò’.

A Nordic lunch

Like the name (hygge seems to be a Danish word) also the lunch menu is quiet Nordic. However it doesn’t lack influences from more exotic parts of the world, like the naan bread from India or the Thai salad from Asia. It is important to understand the overall quality of the ingredients that together guarantee a delicious lunch that is very digestible. By the way, every week they have an other ‘dish of the week’, so there is always a reason to come back.

If after the lunch you still have room for a dessert (I did after enjoying the Hygge versione of the parmigiana di melanzane ‘without remorse’). All the deserts are homemade and have honest flavours which are well-balanced.

At the end of the lunch I off-course had an espresso. It was not only because Hygge presents itself as a ‘coffeehouse bistrò’ but also because they serve the coffee of 7gr, a Milanese coffee company that is not yet known by many but is definitely worth a try. While enjoying this cup of coffee I realised I felt completely at home. So Hygge it is!
